Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” came on my MP3 player, and since I have been sensitized to drumming by Rock Band, immediately went — wow, who IS this drummer? I’d never really listened just to the drums on that song before, and they are amazing. Wikipedia had all the answers; his name is Steve Gadd, and he’s a prodigy drummer, one of the true drumming greats. Turns out he used to play with a band called Stuff back in the 70s. One of the things Stuff did is to be the backup band for singers like Joe Cocker.

In fact, they’d backed Joe Cocker up when he appeared on Saturday Night Live’s first season. I bought the first and second seasons at BJ’s awhile back, and just watched that particular episode a couple of weeks ago… and I remember noticing how good that drummer was while I was watching it.

Funny how things work 🙂
